TUTORIAL: Create a perfect magic ring

We’ve all been there. You’re working on your project, and there’s a pesky hole in the middle of your first round of stitches! Luckily, there’s a solution: a magic ring! Sometimes called a magic circle, it’s a nifty trick and the best way to get rid of the hole or space in your circles.

Creating a magic ring is a necessary skill you need to crochet amigurumi! It’s very helpful if you're looking at creating any type of project that works in a circle, like a beanie or a hat, coasters, or any type or amigurumi (which is what we use it most for!)—basically anything where you're going to be creating a ball or a circle. But we know that it can be confusing and oh-so-frustrating. So, in this tutorial we’re going to be teaching you how to create a perfect magic ring, and we’ll also show you how to crochet within the magic ring.

Let’s dive in!

Start with a long yarn tail so that you can weave it in at the end of your project.

Take your yarn and pinch/stabilize it with your thumb. Wrap the yarn around your three fingers and anchor it with the pinky.

You’ll end up with two parallel strands of yarn on the top, and one cross or ‘X’ in the back.

Take your hook and insert it underneath the first strand that's closest to your nails.

Go underneath this first strand and grab this second strand and pull it under. This will create a little ‘A’.

Turn your hook upwards to create a little loop on your hook.

Then, take the piece of yarn that is anchored with your pinky, yarn over and pull through the loop. You’ll have one loop to work into, your magic ring! So it consists of a yarn tail and a loop.

IMPORTANT: Crochet over top of BOTH the loop and the yarn tail, otherwise your magic ring will not close.

Begin your stitches: work in eight stitches (or whatever your pattern calls for) into the magic ring. This is the exact same as if you are working into a stitch normally but you’re working directly into this ring.

For this single crochet, insert your hook into the hole of the magic ring, yarn over and pull through, yarn over and pull through just like normal to finish your first single crochet.

One single crochet complete!

Complete the rest of your stitches into the middle of the magic ring.

Now the fun part! By pulling on your tail that you crocheted over, you will close the magic ring.

And that’s it!
